Lawyer, Liar, Pants on Fire

By Elissa Wellikson

Elissa Wellikson’s new novel, Lawyer, Liar, Pants on Fire, has been published.

For a number of years, as I drove to and from my job as a corporate attorney, I composed the first chapter of novels in my head.  I kept thinking, “when people find out I'm a lawyer, they always want to tell me lawyer jokes.”  When I sat down and started writing, that became Lawyer, Liar, Pants on Fire.

Lawyer, Liar, Pants on Fire is the story of Rachel Goodman, a Jewish woman from Philadelphia who joins the Navy and is sent to Subic Bay in the Philippines for her first duty station after graduating from law school.  Interspersed with accounts of the trials of dirt bag clients, and descriptions of military life at an overseas duty station, is the story of an unfortunate love affair Rachel has with a Navy SEAL.  The tone of the novel is generally humorous.  Each chapter begins with a lawyer joke that relates to the chapter.

This is my first novel, after spending the last 25 years practicing law, first in the Navy and then in corporate America.  It is drawn from my experiences as a Navy JAG officer in the Philippines.
